I don't know how many times in my life I've swam under a sea turtle. This one time probably.
Sea turtles are some of the most ancient existing animals on the planet. The seven species found today have been around for about 110 million years, since the time of dinosaurs. When they dive to feed on jellyfish, seaweed, sponges, snails or crabs they usually stay underwater for about 5 minutes but are capable of being submerged up to five hours at a time. In that case their heart rates can slow to one beat every nine minutes. Photo © copyright by Craig Kerr.
